ryan and i planned a trip out to arizona to house hunt and it happened to be right after his trip to puerto rico to take his board exam/attend a conference, so i headed to arizona early with the kids instead of staying home alone. we had a great time visiting grandma and grandpa bishop.
the kids made a list of things to do while at grandma's (which we forgot and had to have ryan take a picture of for us).
we had thought we'd be able to play at the splash pad, but the water wasn't running yet. instead we just played at the park next to it. cody and several of the little girl playing at the park that day gave jump roping a shot. it took a few tried, but he finally got several jumps in a row.
the kids all loved forming a band and traded instruments back and forth a lot. bonnie got to be better at playing the kazoo than even isaac! it made me laugh every time she got ahold of one.
grandma let each of us choose breakfast one day. bonnie chose muffins and grapefruit (her very favorite). grandma and grandpa got this fun muffin pan at disney world. nothing better than mickey mouse muffins!
we went for a hike right after breakfast on tuesday morning. these boys love hiking. isaac started to complain of his legs getting tired at the end, but cody could have probably done the whole thing again happily.
bonnie is actually there on my back, even though all you can see if her little feet.
grandma showed the boys a billy goat bridge while bonnie snacked with me in the shade. i'm a bit of a whimp when it comes to sun. i can't get enough of cute baby bonnets.
that night, she really got the hang of peek-a-boo.
she loved sitting with grandpa after he got off work to look at board books. she got really good at imitating (number of syllables at least) words that grandpa would say and got really good at saying 'grandpa' by the end of the week
bonnie went back to this basket of dolls often. she loved pulling them all out. grandma and i spent a lot of time working on sleeping bag cases, so bonnie spent a lot of time checking out grandma's sewing drawers.
the sprinklers don't come on too often this time of year, but the boys took full advantage of running through them. it would have been a great adventure, except that they threw rocks in the grass and had to spend a few hours over the rest of the day picking the rocks out.
i try not to let cody sleep too long for nap time, but all the excitement at grandma's just wore him out. i got him up from his nap, gave him a pile of books, and came back a few minutes later to find this. so sleepy...
pima story time is always a favorite. they made cookies from 'if you give a mouse a cookie'
and while we were in pima, we had to stop to see susan's goats. all cody and isaac could talk about was the last time we saw the goats when they got to feed one a bottle. unfortunately, none are bottle fed right now.
bonnie was fascinated by the goats and the dogs.
i pulled out the wii and taught cody and isaac how to play some of the simpler games. i'm pretty sure they are the first kids to actually play it. cody may or may not have smacked isaac right across the face during a sword fighting game, but mostly they thought it was all great fun.
the college was doing 'beauty and the beast' while we were visiting. grandma and grandpa went to see it on wednesday and said it was fabulous and thought cody would probably like to see the first act. grandpa and i had already planned on going friday night, so we took cody along for the first act and i took him home during intermission. he absolutely loved it and was quite put out that he couldn't stay for the whole thing.
bonnie had one long night while we were there and was up crying several times. when i cleaned her hands up at dinnertime, she cried and cried when i touched her right hand. when i looked closer, she had a big blister on it. we have no idea where it came from or what happened. we tried to get a good picture to send to ryan - didn't really work.
then we pinned a sock to her jammies to keep it covered with a band-aid while she slept at least. don't let the picture fool you, she didn't mind the sock. she was just mad that we held her to take the picture of her thumb and wrap it up.
we never figured out what happened, but it healed after a few days with no problems.
while we played away in arizona, ryan played away in san juan, puerto rico.
well, really he just went to a conference and made it down to look at the beach once.
one other d.o. resident went with him, kirby. it was nice that they could rent a little apartment together and make it not such a crazy trip as it could have been. i think they enjoyed it.
someday, maybe we'll be able to go to some of these conferences together and i can enjoy the beach and sights while he does the boring stuff :)
