a bump in the night

we have had a rough few days around here.

on saturday night, we got the kids to bed and a few residents came over to play games.  we just settled down to choose a game when we heard and thump and loud cry from the boys' room.  ryan got there first and when i went back, he was holding cody over the sink with blood pretty much pouring out of his mouth.  we weren't sure what had happened or why he was bleeding, but his face was swelling fast.  i got some ice and rags to hold to his mouth.  by this time isaac was up and wondering what was going on, so i took him out to have carolyn read him some stories and jon was playing with bonnie of his own accord.  tyler had a fun flashlight on his keychain, so he was trying to help us see into cody's mouth which he wouldn't open.  we finally got the bleeding to stop (ryan could feel where he'd bit his tongue pretty bad) and isaac and bonnie to bed.  cody stayed up for a bit while we got a game going (yes, everyone stayed and we still played a game) and then finally got to bed.

it was a long night with lots of ryan sleeping on the couch with cody.  he was acting pretty normal in the morning, so ryan took the boys to church like usual.  we had lots of shakes and a little bit of applesauce, but cody wouldn't open his mouth much or chew at all.  we decided i better take him in to the clinic on monday to see what one of the attendings thought.

i dropped isaac off with kimmie and took cody and bonnie down to the clinic.  dr ferry took a look and ordered some x-rays.  the x-ray for the clinic wasn't up and running yet, so we tried the dental office.  after a long and apparently very confusing (to the front desk workers) process, they determined cody was too little to do their x-rays.  in which case, we were sent to the hospital for a ct scan.  once we got in the room for the scan, cody absolutely refused to lay down on the bed.  luckily the machine wasn't working right, so that bought us some time to talk about it.  we finally got ryan to come over (from his lunch break) and cody laid right down with no complaint for him :/

(they have a game at the dental office that cody thought he was playing -  it was just the demo over and over)

we picked up isaac and went home after the ct.  isaac fell asleep in the car, so i put him in bed and got cody some lunch when ryan called to tell me cody's jaw was dislocated and we needed to come back to the clinic in about half an hour.  i only cried for a few minutes.....exhaustion, hunger, you name it.  i got cody down for a quick nap, ate lunch, fed bonnie, worked out with liz to watch isaac, woke the boys up, drove to the kroger pharmacy (where cody decided he had to go to the bathroom right then and then isaac decided he had to go to the bathroom too), gave cody some meds that obviously hurt his mouth, took isaac to liz's, drove to the clinic, sat in the exam room waiting for the meds to kick in, and then watched (and tried to distract cody with mickey mouse videos) while they tried to relocate cody's jaw with him screaming bloody murder.  they had to try about five times.  each time got harder to watch until i was in the corner crying.  worst thing i've had to watch as a mom.

whatever they did must have helped cuz cody was ready to eat at dinner time!  he ate some applesauce and macaroni and cheese.  huge step after the previous days! ryan had him open wide for a picture.  you can see how swollen he still was in his cheeks.

and, of course, isaac needed a picture if cody was getting one :)  he was such a trooper being shuffled around all day!

the next morning was the first time we could get cody to open his mouth enough to see the damage to his tongue...

it was totally jagged on both sides - which explained why he didn't eat a whole lot the next couple of days either!

here's the best i could get when i tried to get a picture of three kids.

still pretty swollen, but not nearly as bad as the first day.  i wish i'd gotten a picture!

my friend, liz, brought this stuff over the next morning.  she could tell it had been a rough day for us and more especially for me.  such a kind and thoughtful thing to do! and so very needed.
