we had a great time in thatcher. it was just starting to get hot, so we did a bit of playing outside. grandma had some huge zucchini, so she hollowed them out into zucchini boats. cody and isaac made sure to destroy them within just a few minutes, but they had a great time playing outside while grandma washed the windows and screens.
there's a great splash pad in thatcher now. we went for a picnic before annie had to go back up to mesa. both boys had a great time playing in the splash pad and on the playground. isaac kept getting cold, so we showed him how he could lay on his towel in the sun to warm up. i took the boys again while grandma and grandpa were working at the temple. we saw my college friend bruce bryce and his little boy. i waved hello and then cody took it upon himself to follow bruce and his little boy around for a long time so he could have a 'friend' to play with.
grandma had a little bird's nest in her bird feeder outside with three eggs that she showed us a few weeks ago. when we checked it out in person, there were three baby birds stretching their mouths open. one day cody and isaac were out playing t-ball and came running in to tell me that a baby bird was in the grass.
sure enough, when i went out there was a little baby bird in the grass. we stayed inside so its mother could come help it and when we checked later he was gone. hopefully he made it safely away!
what's a trip to grandma's without a stop at thriftee for a few quarters' worth of rides?
we of course also had to stop by the bakery and get some treats for our tea party. we stopped at a couple of shops downtown that are newer. there was a toy shop that had all their melissa and doug toys 50% off, so i got a few things for christmas. nicole came over for a visit a few days later and we went back and got a few....more things. who can resist such a great deal?
bonnie loved being at grandma and grandpa's house. she was most often found snuggling with grandpa in his big chair. reminds me of when i used to snuggle with grandpa bishop in his big chair :) maybe next time i'll actually get a picture of it!
grandma's friend, susan, is raising goats and invited us to come and meet them. they have lots of babies and one that was being bottle fed. she was nice enough to bring a bottle so cody and isaac could try feeding it.
they loved it!
since they know and love 'billy goats gruff' so much, they loved the big billy goat, mac. he was clearly the biggest billy goat!
grandma has some wonderful dress-ups. she got this pirate costume out for cody (with a long pirate shirt....not dress). he even had an eye patch, but wouldn't put it back on. he's giving me his scary pirate face.
isaac found these lovely high heels and wouldn't hardly take them off. i had to convince him that we don't wear dress-ups to church so he'd get his church shoes on. after church he came home and got these right back on. silly boy!
grandma was nice enough to drive back to texas with us at the end of our visit. i can't imagine how long the trip would have been by myself with three kids! we stopped in fredericksburg for the night and ended up in the worst hotel i've ever stayed in. the first room we got had three inches of standing water in the bathtub and the leaking toilet had completely soaked the carpet near the bathroom. the water pooled around my foot as i walked over. the second room didn't have any big issues like that, but it was just...dirty. if it hadn't been so late and if we hadn't had such tired kids, we probably would have headed somewhere else. we clearly survived and made it home without any issues - and even got a few peaches at a roadside stand outside of fredericksburg to take home with us.
