day four of the cruise was the first day off the boat. we stopped in costa maya, mexico. despite what this picture shows (which was actually at the end of our day), it was a beautiful, sunny morning when we got off the boat.
we took a bus into the jungle to visit two different mayan ruins. with the big zika scare, a lot of people were hesitant to venture into the jungle, but we didn't even see any mosquitos (we all covered up well anyway).
our first stop was dzibanche (which i never really figured out how to pronounce)
right when we got off the bus, we saw this tree with hundreds of caterpillars on it. it looked crazy!
i could hardly believe how big the ruins were once we got to them. its amazing that structures like this have lasted thousands of years.
there are even a few places that you can see the red paint they used back then
the steps were so steep, but sean and ryan just took right off up them!
we all made it to the top and the view was incredible.
there was a kind of open square area with huge structures on each side of it.
you can faintly see the carving on the stone.
as we were leaving this site, someone saw a snake with a frog in its mouth. everyone gathered around it and it ended up spitting the frog out so it could get away. good new though, the frog survived! the whole thing was hilarious to watch - especially with all the people jumping away from the totally harmless snake every time he turned his head.
we had another short bus ride to the second site and on the way, our guide pointed out this monkey. he was on a chain and had a little house he lived it. people here just have monkeys for pets.
kohunlich had a lot of places with more detailed carvings. it was very cool, but right as we pulled up it started raining. we stayed under a canopy for a few minutes to see if it would let up, but it didn't and it wasn't raining that hard so we trudged on
by the time we got to the highest structure, we were starting to feel a little damp, but not too bad.
the carvings here were so detailed. several are missing from people stealing them a long time ago.
you can just see nicole at the top in her neon green.
we left to go to the next canopy and that's when it really started raining.
and then completely pouring.
we just kind of walked past a lot of the structures with a bit of information from our guide. we were completely soaked by the time we got back to the bus. my shoes were filled with water and i hardly had a dry spot on me.
luckily i hadn't put on my jacket at all so when we got to the bus i changed into it to be a little, tiny bit warmer. we had little lunches to eat on the two hour drive back to the bus. it was kind of weird mexican snacks that we didn't love.
the whole drive home we tried not to move much so our cold, wet clothes wouldn't touch us and ended up napping most of the way
except for nicole who sneakily snapped pictures of us.
the ruins were awesome to see. i only with it hadn't been raining so we could hear more about them from our guide!
