arches

here we are at the start of a long summer trip to utah, wyoming, utah, and back home.  mom and dad had proposed a bishop family (with dad's family) reunion at bear lake at the beginning of july.  beth and i reserved a couple of campsites and decided that even though the bishop reunion didn't work out that we'd still meet up.  ryan had to work, but annie was nice enough to join in on our little sister reunion and drive up to utah with me and the kids.  luckily they're super awesome travelers, so it wasn't so terrible.

the drive through northern arizona is pretty desolate on the reservation.  we stopped for lunch at the border at a little gas station with picnic tables.  it was pretty hot and windy so we didn't stay long.  i asked cody if this was a brachiosaurus.  'hang on mom, i'll check' he said.  he walked around to the front and then told me 'its a diplotocus, not a brachiosaurus, because its nostrils aren't on top of its head.'  i didn't realize we had a dinosaur guru on our hands.

we stopped at wilson arch, which is just parking lot on the side of the freeway where you can hike up to the arch.

all of the kids hiked to the top by themselves (annie holding both bonnie's hand most of the way since it was pretty slippery sometimes).

bonnie even made it most of the way down again, but i think the slopes were a little overwhelming.

we also just barely made it into arches national park before they closed.  the boys like to do the junior ranger stuff, so we watched the video about the park.  it was really interesting to learn how the arches form.  we just had time for one short hike to double arches.

we made it to green river for dinner, only to discover that there's pretty much only a burger king there and then stayed the night in price.
